He belonged to the Sekishuken line, an indigenous dog breed from western Shimane, closely related to the modern Shiba Inu. His sire was Hisahara (Kugen) Go Shimane, and his dam was Kochi Go Shimane. The breeder responsible for Ishi was Nobuichi Shimoyama.
In 1936, Ishi's pedigree was officially registered by the Nihon Ken Hozonkai (NIPPO), the Japan Dog Preservation Society, marking a pivotal moment in the preservation and standardization of the Shiba Inu breed.
